Public Works Department

The Public Works Department Staff is a unique group of individuals charged with a wide array of duties and responsibilities. Matt Sorrells is the Director of the Public Works Department and can be reached by phone (910) 579-6297 or e-mail at bsorrells@sunsetbeachnc.gov.  The Staff works throughout the Town on the mainland and the Island performing the following tasks:

  • Maintaining and repairing all of the public beach accesses including the trimming of the adjacent vegetation areas which impede into the access pathways;
  • Maintaining and repairing all Town owned paved and non-paved roadways including grading, scraping, asphalt, and pothole repairs. Property owners on non-paved streets can petition the Town for street paving -- Click here for the  Sample letterprocedure and petition;
  • Maintaining and repairing all Town owned medians and right-of-ways;
  • Installing and maintaining all signage including speed limits, detours, road closures, and hazards on all Town owned roadways;
  • Evaluating existing street lights for maintenance, repair or service, and determining the need for placement of additional lighting;
  • Collection and disposal of debris and garbage from all Town owned roadway right-of-ways;
  • Collection and disposal of garbage discarded in the Beach Barrels on the strand;
  • Collection and disposal of debris and garbage from the gazebo parking lot and trash cans;
  • Cleaning, repairing, and maintaining all of the storm water drains and Town owned catch basins;
  • Collection of the leaf and limb debris as per the collection schedule;
  • Installation and removal of Town decorations during specified holidays;
  • Mosquito control sprayings during the season;
  • Maintaining and repairing all Town owned buildings except the Fire Department building;
  • Maintaining and repairing all Town owned equipment except for vehicles;
  • Responsible for notification to all vacant lot owners of the semi-annual vacant lot maintenance program;
  • Responsible for the removal of deceased animals on the beach strand, Town owned roadways, or within the roadway right-of-ways.
