Planning Board
The Sunset Beach Town Council, pursuant to NCGS §160A-361 and §160A-362, created the Sunset Beach Planning Board. The Planning Board consists of five (5) members. Four (4) members must be citizens and town residents and are appointed by the Town Council. One member must be a citizen of Brunswick County who reside outside the Town but within the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) of the Town as specified by an extraterritorial boundary ordinance adopted pursuant to G.S. § 160A 360(b). The ETJ member is appointed by the Brunswick County Board of Commissioners. The Planning Board members serve three-year staggered terms with no more than two members scheduled for replacement due to the expiration of term in any one year.
Currently, the Planning Board meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers at Town Hall. All meetings are open to the public and a public comment period is held during each meeting. The public is encouraged to attend. Meeting information is placed on the website seven (7) to ten (10) days prior to the meeting and can be viewed here.
The Planning Board powers and duties conveyed are as follows:
- To prepare, review, and recommend to the Town Council, at the Town Council’s request, a comprehensive plan or land use plan and amendments thereto pursuant to NCGS §160D-501.
- To conduct periodic review of the comprehensive plan or land use plan and recommend updates as needed at Town Council’s request.
- To review and make recommendations to the Town Council regarding UDO text amendments zoning text amendments, zoning map amendments, subdivision regulation amendments, and other development regulation amendments.
- To advise the Town Council, at their request, on land use, growth management, and development policy matters.
- To conduct studies and prepare advisory reports, at the Town Council’s request, related to land use, infrastructure planning, growth trends, and community development needs.
- To promote, at Town Council’s request, public participation in planning processes and provide opportunities for community input regarding planning matters.
- To perform other advisory planning functions as may be directed by Town Council, consistent with Chapter 160D.
