Deck Safety

Deck Safety

Due to the alarming rise in number of deck failures nationwide, the Town of Sunset Beach strongly recommends annual inspections on decks. To help with these inspections, the Town has placed two checklists, Deck Evaluation Form and Check Your Deck Checklist, on the Town’s website. These checklists were prepared by North American Deck and Railing Association and more information regarding deck safety is available on their website, www.NADRA.org.

These checklists are tools to aid Homeowners and Contractors in determining if any repairs are needed, and the extent of repairs. In some cases, an engineered evaluation may be needed. Please contact our office to determine if a building permit is required in order to make the necessary repairs. Always ask your Contractor for a copy of the permit prior to construction, and a copy of the final inspection report once complete.

Again, the Town cannot emphasize enough the importance of Homeowners and Property Management Companies to perform routine inspections and maintenance on all decks, stairs and porches to ensure their structural integrity is not compromised.
