Tropical Storm Debby – 08/07/24 Update #2

Town Actions

Town Hall is closed this afternoon and will remain closed on Thursday, August 8, 2024. We will reopen at 8:00 AM on Friday, August 9, 2024. The main line (910-579-6297) is being monitored for non emergency calls. If this is an emergency please call 911.

Town Staff has staged barricades at the bridge and other past troublesome areas. Police, Fire and Public Works personnel remain within Town limits to handle any issues that arise overnight.

The State of Emergency remains in effect. At this time, the Town is NOT issuing a Voluntary Evacuation Order for the island or low-lying areas. If you live in a low-lying area, an area prone to flooding, or feel unsafe in your home, Brunswick County Emergency Services has opened one shelter. Please see below for information.

Conditions

Currently we remain under a Tropical Storm Warning, and a Flash Flood Watch. The Storm Surge watch has been cancelled since the expected surge has been reduced to 1 – 3 inches. Our main concerns remain flooding of low-lying areas, ponding and water breaching area roadways and water breaching the causeway at high tide. The next high tide is 10:50 PM tonight and 11:30 AM tomorrow. If the water does breach the causeway police and fire personnel will be staged on the island for the period that the causeway is breached. Storm force wind GUSTS of 50 to 55 MPH are possible late Wednesday into Thursday morning. The Sunset Beach Bridge will only be closed with SUSTAINED winds of above 40 MPH. We do NOT expect SUSTAINED winds of above 40 MPH with this storm. Bands of heavy rainfall are expected this afternoon, tonight and through tomorrow. The threat of tornadoes will persist tonight through Friday.

We will continue to monitor the storm, updates to the website will be made and e-alerts will be sent as warranted.

Locations of Hazardous Areas

Some ponding along area roadways has dissipated due to the dry spell between rain bands that we have experienced thus far today. However, the bands are starting to reach the coast and will become more frequent as the storm makes landfall along the SC coastline. Heavy ponding along area roadways is expected to return. Please take extreme caution if you must travel.
