Position Objectives:
The Sunset Beach Town Council is seeking to fill a vacancy on the Town Planning Board. The selected candidate must reside within the Town's Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ). The member will fill an unexpired term until January 2028.
The Planning Board advises the Town Council on land use planning and development policy. Members study community conditions and trends, prepare and adopt plans, and recommend policies and ordinances that guide coordinated, efficient, and harmonious development to promote public health, safety, and general welfare.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Make studies of the Town and surrounding areas to understand current conditions and likely future development.
- Determine objectives to be sought in the development of the study area.
- Prepare and adopt plans for achieving these objectives, including the Comprehensive Plan and related maps, charts, and descriptive materials.
- Develop and recommend policies, ordinances, administrative procedures, and other tools to carry out adopted plans.
- Advise the Town Council on the use and amendment of plans and the means of carrying them out.
- Promote public interest in and understanding of recommendations, including publishing and distributing materials and using other education and outreach methods.
- Perform administrative and enforcement functions related to carrying out plans when directed by the Town Council.
- Perform other related duties the Town Council may direct concerning the Unified Development Ordinance or land use matters.
- Hold regular public meetings, maintain records of attendance, resolutions, discussions, findings, and recommendations, and transact business in accordance with adopted rules.
- Contribute to gathering background information and special studies, including maps, statistics, and reports on housing, commercial and industrial facilities, parks and recreation, utilities, transportation, and parking.
- Coordinate with Town officials to obtain records and information needed for planning work and, when necessary, conduct surveys or examinations on lands open to the public.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must reside within the Town of Sunset Beach ETJ at the time of appointment and throughout service.
- Faithful attendance at meetings is required to maintain membership.
- Willingness to complete orientation and training on the Comprehensive Plan, Unified Development Ordinance, and board procedures.
- Ability to review staff reports, plans, and public input, and to deliberate respectfully and transparently in public meetings.
Desirable Training and Experience:
- Familiarity with planning, zoning, land use, or related fields such as real estate, construction, surveying, architecture, engineering, natural resources, or law.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and data.
- Strong analytical, listening, and communication skills.
- Prior service on a board or commission is helpful but not required.
