🤝 Who Is Involved

The NC 904 Corridor Study is a partnership between:

  • The Town of Sunset Beach

  • The Grand Strand Area Transportation Study (GSATS)

  • Brunswick County

  • The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT)

The project team is led by Bolton & Menk and AECOM, with valuable input from community members, business owners, and key stakeholders.

🛣 What the Study Is About

This comprehensive transportation planning effort evaluates current and future traffic, safety, and growth challenges along the NC 904 corridor. The study will identify:

  • Potential roadway connections and intersection upgrades

  • Bicycle and pedestrian facility improvements

  • Policy recommendations to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable travel for all users

Project Timeline

The study is currently underway, with data collection, community engagement, and draft recommendations scheduled throughout 2025.
A final plan will be presented to the Sunset Beach Town Council and the GSATS Transportation Advisory Committee once completed.

🌅 Where It’s Happening

The project focuses on the NC 904 corridor in Sunset Beach, stretching from U.S. 17 to the barrier island.
This vital route serves as:

  • A primary access point to the beach

  • A designated emergency evacuation route

  • A growing area of residential and commercial development

💡 Why It Matters

NC 904 is nearing capacity due to seasonal surges in population and ongoing development. Safety is a key concern, with the northern corridor and nearby U.S. 17 seeing several serious and fatal crashes.

This study aims to:

  • Improve safety and traffic flow

  • Support emergency response access

  • Enhance bicycle, pedestrian, and multimodal options

  • Guide sustainable growth and land use decisions

  • Position the Town for competitive funding opportunities
